About our keynote speaker
Dr. Michele Anciaux Aoki
Dr. Michele Anciaux Aoki
Dr. Michele Anciaux Aoki is an International Education and World Languages Advocate. She previously served as World Languages Program Supervisor at the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, developing the World Languages Competency-Based Credit Program that lay the foundation for the State Seal of Biliteracy. Michele also served as International Education Administrator for Seattle Public Schools, responsible for ten International Schools with Dual Language Immersion Programs in Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin. Michele has served as Program Director and consultant to the University of Washington STARTALK Russian and Portuguese Heritage Language programs since 2011 and coordinated the annual Heritage Language Symposium. In 2020-2021, she developed and managed an innovative state Heritage Language grant for Romanian, Russian, and Spanish Heritage language students to earn the Global Competence Certificate and Global Seal of Biliteracy.
Currently, Michele volunteers with the Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) Testing Team and serves as Advocacy Chair for the National Council of State Supervisors for Language (NCSSFL) and on the Advisory Board of the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Michele has a Ph.D. in Slavic Linguistics from the University of Washington. She has received two leadership awards from WAFLT, the Consul General Award from the Consul General of Japan, and in 2021, the Outstanding Contributions to the Teaching of World Languages in the Pacific Northwest Award from the Pacific NW Council for Languages (PNCFL).
